Stoicism (2)
STOICISM (2)

Definition: The philosophical doctrine of the Stoics. At first conceived by Zeno, Stoicism was a metaphysical system which stressed the correspondence between man and nature as a whole. Wisdom was held to consist in the knowledge of the whole, but to pursue it man had to hold his passion in check. In later Stoicism, represented by Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius, the emphasis shifted to the ethical aspect: a Stoic was taught to endure hardship and adversity with fortitude.
