Sonata form
SONATA FORM

Definition: A pattern of musical composition derived from that of the first movement of a sonata. A work in sonata form opens with an exposition (a statement of the first and second subjects or themes) followed by a development (of the subjects) and ends with a recapitulation (of the subjects) and coda. Sonatas, quartets, concertos, symphonies, etc. may all use sonata form.
