Definition: A sequence of compression and expansion stages of a working substance (e.g. freon, ammonia) induced by mechanical means that permits the continuous transfer of heat from one region (the source) to another region (the sink), where it is either dissipated (e.g. in a refrigerator) or is utilized for heating (e.g. in a heat pump).
