Reactor (4)
REACTOR (4)

Definition: A device in which a fission chain reaction is initiated and controlled. In general it includes a fuel (a source of neutrons) such as uranium or plutonium, a moderator such as graphite or heavy water (which slows the neutrons to a speed permitting the maximization of capture by other nuclei) and a set of control rods (usually made of cadmium or boron) which absorb neutrons readily and which are brought into play to arrest the reaction if and when there is a danger of its going out of control. The energy produced in a reactor may be converted into electricity (via steam turbines) or to mechanical energy (e.g. in nuclear ships). The nuclear reaction can be used as a source of neutrons producing further radioactive material.
