Privy seal (1)
PRIVY SEAL (1)

Definition: (British history) The royal seal formerly affixed to documents to authorize the use of the great seal, or to documents not requiring the great seal. It was originally intended for the sovereign's private business (13th century) but by the mid-14th century had become a public department and had been replaced by the signet. It was abolished (1884), but the office of the lord privy seal remains.
