PHYCOMYCETE

Definition: A member of Phycomycetes, a large class of fungi, both saprophytic and parasitic, whose thallus ranges from a simple protoplasmic mass to a complex mycelium usually consisting of tubular septae, and whose reproduction is frequently asexual (often by the formation of conidia or sporangia), but which may take a variety of sexual forms. Phycomycetes include a number of plant or animal parasites (e.g. the mildew responsible for the Irish potato famine, 1845-9).
