Fraternal polyandry
FRATERNAL POLYANDRY

Definition: Marriage made in order to keep land and resources within a family, when two brother would often marry the same woman, who was usually in the same class.

1. Purposeful and necessary for those involved in the arrangement.

2. Land will be fertile (an important piece) and resources rich (substantial, scarce and limited) to be worth the 'risk'.

3. Wedlock or wedding ceremony takes place in single occasion.

4. Wife won't have preference among the two men. That is, she would be 'available', on an equal or fair basis, to both husbands.

5. No issue of paternity will arise, if she bears a child or children.

6. Brothers won't be fraternal identical twins. That is, none in the triangle will be cheated as a result of mistaken identity.

7. Marriage won't be considered as illegal in the circumstances.

8. Union serves purpose(s), i.e., land and resources won't become the source of enmity or bitter rivalry within close-knit and/or extended family.
