Definition: (idiomatic - fall by the way side) To fail or be unable to make progress.

1. Maximum effort(s) was/were put into endeavour before failure.

2. Attempts to 'rise' have been made but turned out unsuccessful.

3. Help, assistance, etc. that can change situation is non-existent.

4. Place (= 'way' or 'side') fallen into will be 'comfortable'. That is, there will be no compelling force or reason that will cause a repeat and/or persistent tries to be made to get out of situation.

5. Loss, disadvantage, hardship, etc. that will be suffered in the situation will be enormous and long-lasting, as the co-traveller(s) will step over or march on who is down. (To emphasize, connect to #3.)

6. A desire or wish to succeed or to make progress will always exist even while in the condition. That is, an expectation of some miracle, gift, manna, etc. will be possessed by who has failed or been unable.

7. No stepping stone, lady luck, etc. will be in way or at the side. That is, failure or inability will, sadly, be permanent for the loser.
