Definitions:

i. (technical) A word or phrase in which a part of something is used to represent a whole, or a whole is used to represent a part of something. For example, in 'Australia lost by two goals', Australia is used to represent the Australian team.

ii. (rhetoric) A figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole or the whole for the part, the special for the general or the general for the special, as in ten sail for ten ships or a Croesus for a rich man.
