1. Seemingly insurmountable obstacles and opposition, stumbling blocks and challenges, dangers and risks, etc. were in the way of trying, in the opinion of who will end up being surprised (= flabbergasted, mesmerized, gobsmacked, or frightened, panicked, shocked, etc.)

2. Discouragement and threat of sanction, forecasts or predictions of gloom and doom, warnings, protests, etc. were issued to trier-to-be.

3. There would be no basis for a slight confidence or hope that could be said to propel who will have to make an attempt to achieve a goal.

4. The body language and initial attitude or behaviour of who has to perform particular task will reflect some hesitation or reluctance.

5. 'Defiance' or stubbornness, perseverance and determination, etc. will eventually pay off for who dares, ... despite the trepidation.

6. Who will be surprised will not demand a share of the 'spoils' or a bounty after the accomplishment or achievement by the 'superhero'.
