| SELF-DETERMINATION (1) Definition: The right of a country and its people to be independent and to choose their own government and political system. ______________________________________________________________________ * All four stages should be in. Stage 1. a. Realization of a need to be independent, among the elite/patriots exists. That is, purpose is established and/or known. b. An awareness campaign within the larger members of the society takes place. c. Agitation occurs - subtle at first and louder with time. Stage 2. a. 'Movement' will be noticed by the 'oppressors'. b. Engagement and/or discussions are held, appropriately. c. Plebiscite/referendum, etc. is/are conducted. d. Adoption or authorization of a structure within which agitators can operate is given or secured. Stage 3. a. Establishment of legally appropriate framework: constitution, etc. occurs promptly. b. Nomination, election/selection etc. of new leaders of young independent country is organized. c. Handover of power to new leaders takes place. Stage 4. a. Self-government is installed by new rulers. b. Rights obtained or claimed serves purpose(s). c. No 'cry' or agitation for a further partitioning of part(s) of new nation/country will be experienced. ____________________________ | |
