Bedroom tax
BEDROOM TAX

Definition: (in the UK) A reduction in the amount of housing benefit paid to a claimant if the property they are renting is judged to have more bedrooms than is necessary for the number of people in the household, according to criteria set down by the government.

* All seven elements should be in.


1. Purposeful and necessary in the government's opinion.

2. The judgment is made on the completion of consultation.

3. 'Extra' bedroom(s) is/was not that added with planning permission.

4. The marital status of a claimant would not change soon afterwards.

5. Spare room isn't being used and cannot be allocated to some other.

6. Savings from 'tax' will be used judiciously by government.

7. No social upheaval arises from the 'harsh' decision taken.
