(politics) (in the US and many other democracies) A person who is chosen by the candidate in an election, especially that for president, to support them and to have the next highest political position if they win. ii. A candidate competing for a subordinate place, especially the office of vice-president. ______________________________________________________________________ * All eleven elements should be in. 1. Purposeful and necessary (to emphasize). 2. Approved by, and acceptable to, the political party and also the electoral umpire. 3. Believes in the 'dream' of his or her principal. And will, therefore, defend policies, ideas, etc. as if these were originally his or hers. 4. Considered and believed loyal (= trusted and reliable) in the estimation of the principal. ____________________ ... WARTS AND ALL. 5. Picked personally by the presidential candidate, not one imposed by a caucus, godfather, etc. 6. Has a strength of character that matches and complements that of the principal. That is, never outshines the 'president-in-waiting'! 7. Fit and healthy enough to withstand the rigours of the campaign. 8. A 'go-getter', but not deemed by the principal as inordinately ambitious (to emphasize, connect to #5 & #6). ______________________ A JOINT PARTNER ..., 9.
