| PUT-DOWN Definition: (informal) A remark or criticism that is intended to make somebody look or feel stupid. ______________________________________________________________________ * All eight elements would be in. 1. Purposeful for the person making remark or criticizing. 2. What is said or written does not contain a lie or falsehood. That is, remark or criticism is completely true. __________________ 3. What is said or written (= remark/criticism) has only possible interpretations that are 'negative'. 4. Remark or criticism is made in the presence of the intended 'fool'. __________________ 5. Manner of speech or delivery is not playful. That is, remark or criticism is not said in such a way that it is assumed to be a joke or taken as a practical joke ! 6. Person being made to look or feel stupid gets no opportunity at the particular instant to disprove or refute 'allegations'. Or, where a chance is provided for a reaction, this is not adequately taken advantage of. In other words, subject of derision permits action(s). __________________ 7. What is said serves purpose(s). That is, objective of making a person to look or feel stupid is achieved. In other words, some unsavoury response by victim arises from situation. 8. Person who feels or looks stupid as an outcome of remark or criticism was assumed to be intellectually superior, brighter or sharper.
