Definitions:

i. [ ~ (for something) ] An act or a way of punishing somebody.

ii. A cause to suffer for some offense committed.

iii. A suffering given or received.

1. Purposeful and necessary.

2. Earned or deserved by sufferer.

3. Given by the right person or party - official, legal, etc. (= court, tribunal, etc).

4. Ideal or commensurate with the offence.

5. Awarded to the appropriate party. That is, not to a wrong or innocent party, and not to a proxy.

6. Legal, that is, what is meted out is permitted by law to be awarded as a punishment (for emphasis).
