Definition: (North American English) A fixed period of time during which a student who has behaved badly or not worked hard must improve their work or their behaviour.

3. Specific (and doable) performance targets are set for the student this period.

4. Appropriate, authorized and approved help is made available to student at this time - from teacher(s), staff, etc.

6. There is a sure consequence for not improving performance or behaviour and the student is fully aware of this, before the start of the specific period.

7. Period achieves objective(s). That is, desired improvement is achieved or student pays the price for not making required improvements in his or her studies or attitudes.
