| PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE Definition: A person who is kept in prison because of his or her political or religious beliefs. ______________________________________________________________________ * All ten elements would be in. 1. Purposeful and necessary - in the oppressors' opinion. 2. 'Lawfully' imprisoned! (There was a 'trial', even if kangaroo!) __________ 3. Beliefs are specific and identifiable and propagated by this prisoner before being jailed and even while incarcerated. 4. Prisoner is allowed basic personal needs in prison. That is, person is not kept in captivity with the intention for him or her to die ... out of a lack of care. _______________ 5. Cajoled, threatened, harassed or intimidated, etc., yet does not renounce beliefs in prison. 6. Duration of imprisonment is considered adequate or tolerable, but only in the prisoner's opinion (connect to #9). ____________________ 7. Person is never maltreated in prison. Serves no hard labour, never in forced solitary, etc. In fact, prisoner is a hero/heroine in jail! 8. Prisoner has an 'army' of supporters outside the prison clamouring for his or her unconditional release (connect to #7). ____________________________ 9. On release, social conscience resumes his or her campaign. (May go back sooner rather than later!) 10. Imprisonment does not truly serve any purpose(s).
