Preventive detention
PREVENTIVE DETENTION

Definition: (British English, law) A system in which people who are guilty of many crimes are kept in prison for a very long time.

1. Purposeful and believed necessary in the opinion of the authority.

2. Based on a sound legal footing; a sentence is not being appealed.

3. Society tried and failed to stop repeats while criminal was free.

4. Similar crimes can't be committed while the offender is locked up.

5. Outcome of long incarceration will not lead to a review of the law.

6. Convict won't be attacked or die or become a vegetable while held.

7. Reformation will be achieved as a consequence; serves purpose(s).

8. Activities in jail will not cause an unplanned loss for jailers.
