Prevarication
PREVARICATION

Definition: The act or art of hiding the truth by deliberately not giving a direct answer to a question.

1. Purposeful - to achieve a particular aim.

2. Necessity, that is, justifiable to hide truth (connect to #3).

3. A benefit is earned, even if temporarily, or will be earned from the 'insincerity'.

4. A consequence exists for the evasiveness, especially if its deliberateness is found out later.

5. There is a strong suspicion of what the direct answer (= truth or a lie) is. What questioner seeks is only confirmation of a (the) fact.

6. Direct answer is never given, no matter the pressure or promise or change in circumstance.

7. Indirectness achieves objective(s) as hoped for. That is, person prevaricating gets away with the 'beat about the bush'.

8. Basis is usually a nagging undisclosed fear of being misunderstood and/or blamed, especially where an outright lie is not told.
