Definition: (idiomatic - play possum) (informal) To pretend to be asleep or not aware of something, in order to trick somebody.

2. Expected gain or outcome from pretence can be estimated.

3. No unplanned loss will be suffered by pretender or the unaware.

4. Person tricked will not fall into any danger during the period.

5. Mischief will not be admitted immediately or soon after, maybe only much later.

6. Trickery achieves objective(s), hoping you wake up from 'sleep', whatever this/these is/are.

7. There cannot be a compelling force during period, to cause a brief waking or an admission to be made, of being slightly aware of a thing.
