| BASKET CASE (1) Definition: (informal) A country or an organization whose economic situation is very bad. ______________________________________________________________________ * All seven elements would be in. 1. Country or organization saw calamity coming ... did not want situation, but is not able to prevent it. 2. The cause(s) of situation are specific and identifiable. That is, the wastage or mismanagement, corruption or maladministration, policy failures or inconsistencies, etc. that is/are responsible for being in dire straits are not unknown. 3. No prospects of growth or recovery; no availability of human or natural resources that can be tapped or harnessed or exploited; no reserves or savings to fall back on - nothing bright or encouraging in the economic horizon. 4. No possibility of a 'silver lining' in the immediate future. That is, all possibilities for financial support such as a loan, bailout, rescheduled amortization, etc. are foreclosed. 5. There will be no time and space to manoeuvre, for a 'rescue plan', or a reform, or a revitalization process to yield positive fruits. 6. Pressure from creditors, development partners, suitors, etc. to invade, liquidate, buyout, take-over, etc. the beggar-country or organization, will be mounting, relentless and insistent. 7. Loss or losses, resulting from inflation, recession, unemployment, etc., including political and/or social upheavals, as a fallout of failed economic theories (if any), will be significant. __________________________________ See perfect BASKET CASE (2). | |
