| POLICE STATE Definition: (disapproving) A country where people's freedom, especially to travel and to express political opinions, is controlled by the government, with the help of the police. ______________________________________________________________________ * All twelve elements would be in. 1. Purposeful, from the government's point of view. 2. Government is, in truth, 'de facto'. That is, those in power are not really representatives of the people: not truly elected or appointed. 3. No protests and/or strikes by the citizenry about prevailing conditions. 4. (Reserved.) (Police won't eventually overthrow the government as a result of influence wielded during period.) __________________ QUIET ! 5. Basic necessities of life are available (to emphasize). 6. Visitors from other countries can visit and stay for as long as desired, as long as a law of the country is not broken. 7. Broadcasts from foreign agencies can be heard and listened to. __________________ SIT DOWN ! 8. Police is not excessively high-handed in rendering 'help'. 9. Some level of economic progress is being made in the country, in the opinion of a majority of the citizenry (connect to #12). 10. Situation lasts for duration desired by the authoritarian government and achieves objective(s). __________________ STAND UP !!! 11. No serious crimes or illegalities happen in this 'closed' state. 12. No control of the economy by government.
