| MERCHANT BANK Definition: (British English) A bank that deals with large businesses. ______________________________________________________________________ * All eleven elements would be in. 1. Purposeful - Profit! More profit!! And bigger profit!!! 2. Considered necessary to engage in particular line of banking business (connect to #1). 3. Legally registered and licensed to engage in merchant banking. 4. Fully and adequately capitalized, with no toxic (= very bad) debts in its books. 5. Professionally run or managed. That is, its services are efficient and effective. In other words, dealings with businesses are mutually beneficial to bank and customers. 6. Rates, interests, agreements, etc. negotiated with bank are not so exorbitant that they have a negative effect on the local, regional or national economy. 7. Its operations are restricted only to its core mandate - no commercial or retail banking, and no merchandising! (To emphasize.) 8. Fulfils all legal obligations - makes appropriate returns, pays its taxes, etc. And performs some corporate social responsibility. 9.
