Mendel's laws
MENDEL'S LAWS

Definition: Three principles in genetics, which have been shown since Mendel enumerated them to be subject to many exceptions: (1) during the formation of the gamete (meiosis), paired genetic units representing alternate characteristics (e.g. curly hair or straight hair) separate, individual gametes receiving only one element of the pair (2) the process in which corresponding genetic units unite during the formation of the zygote is governed by chance. The distribution for a given character in the offspring represents the probability of the appearance of that character (3) One of the pair of genetic units combining in the zygote is dominant and the other recessive. Characters do not appear as a mixture of qualities of each unit but are inherited on an all-or-none basis.
