| MAJOR SURGERY Definition: (medicine) Surgical procedure involving potential danger to the patient or requiring a general anesthesia or special skill. ______________________________________________________________________ * All twelve elements would be in. 1. Purposeful and necessary, as decided after being professionally assessed or recommended through a referral. 2. Procedures will be prepared for in advance. But no time will be wasted in starting and completing process. 3. The patient and/or family will be comprehensively briefed about the implication and likely consequences. 4. Where required, approval and/or endorsement, will be given before a commencement of organizing treatment. 5. Surgeons and support staff that will deal with situation will be the most senior available at the point in time. 6. Seriousness of requirement will exclude an intern or medical student from getting into the operating theatre. 7. The highest level of professionalism will be displayed while handling patient and/or performing surgery. 8. Duration that operation lasts will be such that considerable period would have been spent on attaining cure. 9. What will be done won't be experimental. That is, no a trial and error attempt, i.e., not strictly new frontiers. 10. The operation won't result from or be the fallout of a minor surgery having gone wrong ! (To emphasize, see definition.) 11. Effective post-operative management will be in place, in order to ensure speedy and steady recovery of who had surgery. 12.
