| BACKSLIDER Definition: Someone who backslides (= fails to do something that they agreed to do and returns to their former bad behaviour). ______________________________________________________________________ * All nine elements would be in. 1. Person was previously truly a born-again. Or the person genuinely 'agreed in principle' to the arrangement(s) that was/were earlier subscribed to. (BELIEVED. TRUSTED.) 2. Not a doubter or destroyer. That is, person is still a faithful of the religion. Or the person will not have a plan or an intention to betray the cause or totally abandon the general direction. (HOPEFUL. MEMBER.) 3. Knows or can trace the cause or causes for backsliding. Or has a reason or reason for U-turn or renunciation. (INFLUENCED. RETHOUGHT.) 4. Does not try to justify return to bad ways. That is, fully aware of situation. In other words, person is believed to be in his or her right senses during the period. (CHANGE OR MIND. RECONSIDERATION.) 5. Gets some worldly enjoyment or benefits or gains some temporary advantage from returning to former bad behaviour. (HAPPY. PLEASED.) 6. Can retrace steps and go back being on the 'straight and narrow'. Or can be convinced to honour commitments made. (WHAT IF? WHY NOT?) 7. This person will be fighting his or her conscience. Or he or she will be struggling with external pressures to become 'holy' or honourable again. (DOUBTING. DISTURBED.) 8. Unreliable person won't blame anyone or group for the absence of steadfastness. And/or accepts full responsibility for the decision taken to withdraw former endorsement or renege on a promise or pledge. (NO FRETTING. NO RENEWAL.) 9. Will be welcomed back to the faith or trusted to be readmitted to the group, if and when he or she decides to become penitent and reliable again.
