| LAME DUCK (2) Definition: (US, informal) A politician or government whose period of office will soon end and who will not be elected again. ______________________________________________________________________ * All six elements would be in. 1. Nothing of serious impact will be attempted or be done with the remaining period of time, because the desired or required cooperation or support will not be available. 2. New promise(s) that will not be possible to keep within the remaining period is/are are not made. Or, where a pledge that others believe cannot be fulfilled is made, this will be plainly rejected or condemned to his/her/its face ! 3. Politician or government knows the limitations and/or restrictions imposed by limited time remaining, and this will be reflected in attitudes and behaviour, policies and reforms, etc., etc. that will be exhibited - courting or cultivating friendship, making amends, redeeming political IOUs, etc., etc. 4. (Reserved.) (Politician or government will be wishing that inevitable 'endgame' will be postponed. And where possible, planning for an extension of the period of time remaining.) 5. Will take potshots without reacting appropriately or as he/she/it would have liked, knowing that some degree of defiance can be shown and gotten away with by the electors/voters and/or staff/employees. 6. Will be planning how to have some relevance or how to still retain some popularity after end of tenure - not hoping to be finally politically 'decapitated' after leaving office. _________________ * AGONIZING.
