Iroquois
IROQUOIS

Definition: A member of a confederacy of North American Indian tribes founded (circa 1570) to eliminate incessant intertribal warfare and cannibalism. It included the Mowhawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca and, later, the Tuscarora and others. They occupied the region between Virginia and Ontario (16th to 18th centuries). They were allied with the British, first against the French and later against the American revolutionaries. Their descendants live mostly in southern Canada.
