Hanseatic league
HANSEATIC LEAGUE

Definition: A commercial league of North German towns, founded in the 13th century to control trade in the Baltic. Centered in the Lubeck, the League included more than 70 towns in the 14th century, and by the 15th century dominated the trade of North Europe. It enforced its monopoly by means of boycotting, developed its own system of commercial and maritime laws, and established branches and several privileges in many towns. It declined in the 16th century as national commerce developed, and was dealt a fatal blow by the Thirty Years' War.
