Definition: (sometimes disapproving) Food, money or clothes that are given to a person who is poor.

* All nine elements should be in.


1. Purposeful and necessary, in giver's opinion.

2. Requested or begged for by the poor. And/or it is not grudgingly accepted, if offered freely.

3. Food is edible, or food items are usable. And not stale or passed its/their use-by date; money is the right currency and in the right denominations. And not counterfeits; clothes are clean, neat and hygienic to use, be these cast-offs or brand new dresses. And not dirty!

4. Quantity and amount is adequate in the estimation of receiver (= the poor), to make meaning (to be useful).

5. Given and received timely.

6. Gesture is not accompanied with a condescending remark or comment. And item(s) is/are not given with derision.

7. Given unconditionally. That is, no service is requested or demanded to be performed by the recipient (= the poor), before, during and/or after collection of 'gifts'.

8. Not given and then a wait, for a thank you. (To emphasize.) (And no effort will be made by the giver to withdraw item(s) if the poor does not express gratitude.)

9. Act achieves objective(s), even if this is just to make giver feel good, fulfil all righteousness, perform a religious obligation, etc., etc.
