HAMITIC LANGUAGES

Definition: Two groups of languages related to the Semitic family and spoken in Africa north of the equator. The eastern group is spoken in Ethiopia and the area between the Nile and the Red Sea. The Northern group is spoken in the Berber districts of North Africa. The Hamitic languages have also influenced many of the continent's non-Hamitic tongues, including the Hottentot. Hamitic inscriptions have been found on ancient Egyptian papyri. Today there are 47 stock languages and 71 dialects.
