Gunboat diplomacy
GUNBOAT DIPLOMACY

Definition: A way of making another country accept your demands by using the threat of force.

1. Purposeful and necessary - for practitioner!

2. Threat is specific and identifiable (connect to #6 & #8).

3. Threat is issued timely, to help achieve goal(s).

4. Threat is realistic (to emphasize).

5. Threat is issued in a very serious manner.

6. Danger or loss, if threat is carried out, will be enormous.

7. A 'readiness', 'preparedness' or 'willingness' to carry out threat is palpable - for the cowed country.

8. Threat is believed by the harassed country. That is, weaker nation does what bully wants. In other words, the act achieves objective(s).

9. A refusal, by weak country, to succumb will NOT lead to the use of force, as no 'gun' or weapon or will be deployed in the process.
