Definition: A member of a genus of the largest class of fungi, both saprophytic and parasitic, showing great variation in morphology and reproduction, but all possessing an ascus. The class includes yeasts, truffles, the fungi that produce penicillin, many common mildews and molds, as well as the fungi responsible for elm and chestnut tree blights.
