Definition: A form of address at the beginning of a letter, e.g. 'Dear Sir'.

2. The recipient or addressee will be known by way of gender, etc.

3. Contents of letter, etc., will not contradict the meaning or interpretation that can be given to the form of address used.

4. Space occupied by what is 'said' (written) will be appropriate.

5. Language or writing used will be understood by reader, hearer.

6. Usage serves purpose(s), whatever the end result or outcome, and especially if no complaints arise from choice of felicitous words.
