Glacial period
GLACIAL PERIOD

Definition: A period of geological time when a large part of the earth's surface was covered by glaciers. There have been three major glacial periods. The earliest was in late Precambrian times, 600-700 million years ago, the second in late Palaeozoic times, 250 million years ago (in the southern hemisphere), and the third, to which the term is most often applied, in the Pleistocene period, when an ice sheet covered North America and North Europe. The best known existing ice sheets are those of Greenland and Antarctica.
