Gallicanism
GALLICANISM

Definition: (history) A theory claiming the restriction of papal power over the Roman Catholic Church in France. It originated in the Great Schism and reached its height in the 17th century, in the quarrel between Louis XIV and Innocent XI. The French bishops declared their independence (1682), but Louis abandoned Gallicanism (1693). The issue was submerged in the French Revolution.
