Freedom of information act
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT

Definitions:

i. (1966) Law that makes U.S. government agency records, except those involving national security and other confidential matters (such as trade secrets and investigatory files), available to the public. It was amended by the Privacy Act of 1974, which enables individuals ton know what federal agency records apply to them and to ensure that these records are accurate.

ii. (U.S.) A law passed July 29, 1976, requiring federal agencies to make records available for public scrutiny, to have open meetings and make public any communications that influence decisions. Similar laws are in effect in most states. Known as the Sunshine law.
