| FOB OFF Definition: (phrasal verb - fob off) (disapproving) If someone fobs you off, they tell you something just to stop you asking questions. ______________________________________________________________________ * All ten elements would be in. 1. Talker has a purpose and thinks utterance necessary. 2. You were ready, waiting or 'primed' to ask questions. 3. What you are told dispels a doubt or worry or suspicion. 4. The thing you are told will be completely and audibly heard. 5. What will be heard will be concise, short and absolutely clear. 6. Thing will not touch your raw nerves and so cannot cause an annoyance that will result in a speech act which may be misconstrued or misinterpreted as a grilling or style of asking questions. 7. What you are told is not a warning or threat to not ask a thing. And it will not be a demand to not ask or a request for clarification. 8. Thing has no force of law. That is, no legal reason to stop an ask. 9. Comments to be made, if desired, will not be affected by the thing. 10.
