| EUROPEAN UNION Definition: (abbreviation: EU) (usually - the European Union) An economic and political organization that many European countries belong to. ______________________________________________________________________ * All twelve elements should be in. 1. Purposeful and necessary for the members who voluntarily subscribe to its principles. 2. Legal framework for its existence and sustenance is in place. That is, an individual member-country has passed a law to enable her be part of group. 3. Union is solidly set-up and it has a strong organizational structure, with the relevant institutions to look after its interests. 4. Administration and management of its secretariat is efficient. That is, Eurocrats are trained and effective in the discharge of their responsibilities. 5. Has a Constitution in place (to emphasize, connect to #2). 6. Safe, strong and protected. That is, its 'borders' are not easily breached. In other words, militarily-strong and with adequate security consciousness. 7. All 28 Member-states, for now, in the Union, have strong economic bases and the social strata in their societies are stable. That is, no country among its members is faced with serious challenges/upheavals to threaten the existence of the Union as a unit. 8. Member-states in the group live peacefully within and with their neighbouring countries, especially with those that are non-member(s). 9. Human, religious, social and political rights and freedoms, exists and are respected, between the member-states and for the citizens. 10. Industrial activities engaged in by the members of the Union do not despoil the atmosphere or the environment. 11. Body is not expansionist in nature, and will not make membership difficult for an eligible applicant country. 12. Body fulfils its mandates, as enshrined in its constitution.
