Definition: [ ~ (for/to somebody) ] (especially North American English) A speech given at a funeral praising the person who has died.

1. Purposeful and considered a necessity to praise the deceased.

2. Person is confirmed dead before funeral activities commence.

4. Praise is of a general kind. That is, no specific mention is made of particular accomplishment(s) of the late person. (To emphasize.)

5. Short or brief and concise - straight to the point (connect to #4).

6. What is said is good enough to be included in the epitaph.

7. Speech was not crafted by the deceased before his or her passing.

8. Has an effect, a positive one, on the people listening at the funeral. That is, speech serves purpose(s), hopefully.

9. Details in speech are completely true. That is, what is read or said contains no lie, half-truth, misrepresentation, exaggeration, mistakes or errors, etc., etc. (No mention of his or her flaws!)

10. Has no provision for a poem, song, libation, 'special number', etc. during its delivery (Connect to #5.)
