Escalator clause
ESCALATOR CLAUSE

Definition: A clause allowing for a rise in pay, e.g. according to the rise or fall of the cost of living, incorporated in an agreement between an employer and the union.

* All six elements should be in.


1. Purposeful and necessary to have provision in place.

2. Not illegally smuggled into or included in agreement.

3. Able to automatically come into operation, when 'triggered'.

4. Causes no unplanned loss to an employer (to emphasize).

5. Serves purpose(s) or achieves goal(s), exactly as hoped.

6. Not possible to be 'deescalated' - won't lead to decline.
