| ELITE (1) Definition: A group of people in a society, etc. who are powerful and have a lot of influence, because they are rich, intelligent, etc. ______________________________________________________________________ * All ten elements would be in. 1. Purposeful and considered a necessity by the powerful and intelligent set to be together as an informal group. 2. Resists or prevents 'outsiders' from encroaching into group. 3. Holds power or exercises influence tenaciously or firmly. 4. Uses the power and influence possessed 'selfishly' - in the opinion of non-members. 5. Will always or mostly manipulate the system (= law, rules and regulations, institutions, personnel, etc.) to its advantage. 6. Has control over the coercive instruments of the society, state or country. That is, the legal armed forces are under its 'authority'. 7. Never collectively and permanently surrenders its grip on the levers of power in society or state. 8. Will not use power or influence wrongly or illegally. That is, its actions and inaction would not lead to the collapse of the society, country, etc. In other words, must not be above the law. 9. Exists for period desired by members. That is, group will always be, only changing its membership, to reflect the changing economic and political circumstances of members. 10.
