Definition: (history) One of the ecclesiastical and temporal princes who elected the Holy Roman Emperor. There were originally, in the 13th. century, six electors. From 1356 to 1547 there seven, the Archbishop of Mainz, Trier and Cologne, the King of Bohemia, the count palatine, the duke of Saxony, and the duke of Brandeburg. By the time the Holy Roman Empire came to an end in 1806 there were ten electors.
