| ELDER STATESMAN (1) Definition: An old and respected politician or former politician whose advice is still valued because of his or her long experience. ______________________________________________________________________ * All nine elements should be in. 1. Purposeful and necessary to have politician considered in this way and consulted when necessary. 2. Past the retirement age for civil servants! That is, would be qualified for old age pension if person had served in the civil service!! 3. Politician's senses are, or the mind is, still sharp. And he or she possesses an excellent ability to recall past events. 4. Experience is rich and varied: lost some 'battles' (defeats) and won some 'wars' (victories); sometimes in government, other times in opposition. 5. Not partisan or plainly biased. And not a card-carrying member of a political organization. And not a bigot! (To emphasize.) 6. Not running for an elective office, in the near or distant future! Not planning a political comeback and not eligible for selection into a partisan committee or lobbying for a political appointment!! 7. Will not deliberately lie to or mislead those who seek his or her advice. And will not ask for or receive a payment for advice given. And also gets nothing in lieu of a payment!! 8. Advice that politician gives makes sense, whether it is taken or not heeded. 9. Serves purpose(s), but only if or when consulted. ___________________________________ A NEUTRAL 'GRAND MASTER'. | |
