EDITORIAL

Definition: (British English) An important article in a newspaper, that expresses the editor's opinion about an item of news or an issue; in the US also a comment on radio or television that expresses the opinion of the station or network.

1. Purposeful and necessary. (Connect to #8.)

2. Factual and meaningful.

3. Not sent for approval by owner or proprietor before publication/broadcast. (To emphasize.)

4. Authorized by the editorial board (connect to #3 & #10).

5. Opinion or comment is firm and strongly stated - not an indecisive or non-committal remarks or statements!

6. Beneficial and sensible.

7. Written by the substantive editor.

8. Read completely or listened to all through by reader/listener.

9. Print/broadcast is clear/audible.

10. Does not put writer, proprietor or owner in a mess. That is, opinion or comment will not be libelous, sub judice, malicious, etc.

11. Will not lead to a reduction in the numbers of readers/listeners. That is, ratings (= sales, income!) do not drop as a result of what is published/broadcast.
