DOWNSIZING

Definition: The act of reducing the number of people who work in a company, business, etc. in order to reduce cost.

1. Purposeful (see definition).

2. Considered necessary to effect reduction.

3. The labour union and/or employee(s) are informed, in advance, about the likelihood of impending retrenchments.

4. The staff laid off are not the 'backbone' of the business, etc.

5. Dues, allowances, etc. that are the entitlements of dismissed or retired staff are fully and timely paid.

6. Production level or productivity does not decrease greatly, as a result of the act, to affect profit or sustainability of the company, etc. (connect to #4).

7. No unplanned loss arises from exercise, especially from the reaction of the laid off employee(s).

8. (Reserved.) (Employees sent away are absorbed or engaged in some other companies, businesses, etc.)

9. Act achieves objective(s).
