DETRACTOR

Definition: (especially formal) A person who tries to make somebody/something seem less good or valuable by criticizing it.

1. Person has a purpose, even if this is undisclosed.

2. Cannot do or has not effectively done the thing being criticized, or is not as good as the person being made to look cheap. (To emphasize.)

3. Condemnation and criticism is not fully justified. That is, claims of poorness or cheapness are not completely true.

4. Critical comments are virulent (harsh), persistent or insistent (time-consuming) and petty (demoralizing).

5. Criticisms get to the person being 'attacked', making further progress or the possibility of an improvement difficult.

6. Interest of critic or purpose of criticism is served by the response obtained (connect to #5).

7. Nothing valuable is gained by anyone in the situation (connect to #5 & #8).

8. There is a loss to the community, society, organization, etc. as a result of discouragement.
