DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION

Definition: (Social science) Period of demographic change occurring concomitantly with industrialization, usually beginning with traditionally high birth and death rates and a resulting slow rate of population growth; with death rate declining due to developments in public health and medicine, creating a demographic gap and expanding population; and finally, followed by falling birth rate, restoring the pattern of moderate growth.
