DEMAGOGUE (2)

Definitions:

i. (disapproving) A political leader who tries to win support by using arguments based on emotion rather than reason.

ii. (disapproving) A person you criticize because you think they try to win people's support by appealing to their emotions rather than using reasonable arguments.

1. Has the ability or skill, prowess or sense, etc. to argue reasonably. That is, politician or person is smart and possesses the knowledge and/or information necessary to use to try to convince.

2. Will usually go beyond the ordinary or the usual in approach. That is, appeals to the basest emotions or touches the most sensitive emotions of the person being engaged.

3. Generally exaggerates or overemphasizes. But will not deliberately apply a threat or tell a lie or an untruth in the process of trying. (Connect to #5.)

4. Never conveys an understanding of the reasons that would be preferred, by the others, for not willing to support. That is, the point of view of another will not be appreciated by politician or the particular person.

5. Knows for certain the truth. But will twists and suppress facts, prevaricate, etc., if considered necessary.

6. Never gets tired in trying to persuade listener, reader, etc. That is, criticism won't get to him or her, whether or not a try succeeds.
