| ABSTINENCE (1) Definition: (formal) The practice of not allowing yourself something, especially food, alcoholic drinks or sex, for moral, religious or health reasons. ______________________________________________________________________ See perfect SELF-DISCIPLINE. See perfect SELF-SACRIFICE. * All seven elements would be in. 1. Act will be purposeful and considered a necessity. That is, there will be a full awareness of the consequences of being involved or being not engaged in the practice. 2. A temptation or challenge, a dare or an urge, etc. will be optimal in the situation. That is, things 'desired' will be obtainable or available, and there will be a serious, constant pressure to grub, quaff and/or shag/shack. 3. No real, long-lasting gain or benefit will be available in allowing yourself to even attempt, or to have or do, the thing. That is, the seeming 'goodness' in desires, if had, lasts for only a short while. 4. Thing restrained from will not be deemed, by right-thinking persons, as ennobling or befitting in the circumstances. 5. No unplanned loss, especially of a health related kind, will be suffered as a direct outcome of the efforts made at self-discipline. And no legal or societal sanction will be meted out for 'refusal'. 6. Restrain will be on for a considerable duration, whether this be decades or years, months or weeks, days or hours ... or few minutes ! 7. Feeling will be of goodness after practice is terminated. That is, person who is on a fast or temporary teetotaler or emergency celibate will be happy with self and benefit in the end.
